Shetland Music Spotlight: “January Again” by Michael Williamson

A nostalgic look back at Shetland’s music scene in 2013-2014!

🎶 “January Again”
From Michael Williamson’s album Liberty Follows (2013), this song captures the heartfelt and collaborative spirit of Shetland’s musical traditions. The track features an ensemble of remarkable musicians whose contributions create a rich and layered sound:

  • Michael Williamson: Guitar and vocals
  • Jimmy Quinn: Guitar and backing vocals
  • Arthur Nicholson: Guitar, harmonica, and backing vocals
  • Chris Thomson: Vibes
  • Magnus Polson: Bass
  • Gwyn Davies: Drums
  • Chloe Robertson: Fiddle
  • Carol Jamieson: Keys

The Video:
The video, which I directed and edited, is composed of imagery gathered during my ethnographic fieldwork in Shetland. It reflects the island’s unique landscapes, cultural vibrancy, and the bonds that connect its people to their music. Creating this video was a deeply fulfilling way to merge ethnography and artistic expression.

A Personal Connection:
Having lived in Michael Williamson’s house for about a year, I gained a profound appreciation for the musicians behind this song—not only for their talent but for the depth of character they brought to their work and their community.

CAP Shetland:
This project was part of an exercise in establishing CAP Shetland (Contemporary Alternative Productions Shetland), an initiative aimed at showcasing local artistry and fostering creativity in the region. Though experimental in nature, it offered an invaluable opportunity to explore the intersection of ethnography, production, and music.
