In this session, we analyzed the film Contact (1997), directed by Robert Zemeckis and featuring Jodie Foster and ‘flat world’ Matthew McConaughey. Contact was definitely one of the most influential alien contact films from the period. It featured a new way of traveling throughout the universe, in an ancient machine that allows for people to visit their dead relatives. It’s a classic on audience manipulation and heart string pulling. The original live stream was pulled from YouTube almost immediately, and blocked in all countries within a few hours. This violates our right as analysts to comment on any piece of media that exists in the public realm.
