The Fieldwork Proposal and the Accordion & Fiddle Festival

This short documentary revisits the beginning of my ethnographic fieldwork in Shetland, northern Scotland, where I arrived in late 2012 to explore the local music scene and everyday life at 60° North. Filmed before I upgraded my equipment, the video captures a transitional moment—between academic panels and field immersion, ferry rides and festivals, archival research and spontaneous encounters. Along the way, I reflect on the landscape, the people, and the unexpected significance of figures like Erving Goffman, whose own dissertation was based on fieldwork in Shetland. More than a preview, this piece stands as its own record of arrival—of walking, listening, rethinking, and beginning again.
